What is Prezi? Its advantages and disadvantages!

Prezi… You might have of heard of it, you might not have heard of it, regardless, it isn’t difficult to figure out what it is. Prezi was released in early 2009 as a new age cloud-based ZUI (zooming using interface) presentation and storytelling software. It is used very regularly now by students and enterprise businesses, making it a very popular online service to share and present ideas and information to viewers whenever or wherever they might be. Just like my how-to post on WordPress I am going to give a small step-by-step process to setting up a Prezi account. So shift your gaze below and get reading:

  1. You start by opening your preferred internet browser (mine is google chrome)
  2. In the URL bar fill in http://www.prezi.com and press enter on your keyboard
  3. When you reach the Prezi homepage you’ll be presented with a lot of pretty graphics, but don’t get distracted, click ‘Sign Up‘ in the top right-hand-side of your window
  4. Now you should be presented with three main options and two sub options, don’t jump straight to the free option (especially if you’re a student), take your time to choose the right option for you
  5. If you choose the plain free option proceed as follows (if you choose the student option skip to step 6):
    • Fill in the empty fields first name, last name, email, and password (don’t forget to verify your password) OR you can sign up using Facebook (handy)
    • Tick the Terms and Conditions box
    • Then click ‘Register and Continue’ at the bottom of the page
    • Boom! You can now start making your very first Prezi presentation (it’s simples)
  6. If you chose the student option (like me), then you’re in for a few extras 😉
  7. All you need to enter is your student mail in the empty field and press continue and you should be ready to go!

Brilliant, now you’re well on your way to becoming an expert presenter, but is Prezi the right option for you? Prezi has many advantages and disadvantages, a few of which I have listed below:

Advantages:

  1. Prezi presentations are made via the internet which doesn’t limit you to one device allowing easy to access to your presentation wherever you are
  2. By using Prezi rather then PowerPoint or Keynote your presentations may be a lot more creative
  3. Your Prezi presentations can be a lot more engaging then PowerPoint or Keynote
  4. By using Prezi you can make your presentation public for anyone to watch in their own time
  5. Prezi allows you to share information online
  6. Prezi is also free for students

Disadvantages:

  1. Unfortunately, the free account with Prezi limits you to basic functions. If you want more tools and options you will have spend a little money
  2. Quite a big disadvantage is that no audio can be added to Prezi presentations
  3. Not printer friendly, so if you need to hand your slides up to your lecturer be aware that this might present a bit of a road block

So, now that you know how to set up a Prezi account, and the advantages and disadvantages of Prezi, will you be using it for your next college or business presentation? Until next time, happy blogging! 🙂
